A crime ring that targets babies

A crime ring of doctors and medical personnel stands accused of executing a scam which killed at least 10 infants. A total of 21 suspects are in custody for transferring newborns from public to private hospitals. Patients receive higher payments by the Turkish Social Security Institution (SGK) for infant care in private hospitals.

The scammers then lied to the parents about the conditions of their newborns to extract more money out of them. The profits were shared amongst the group. Often the babies were left in intensive care units way beyond their necessary stay to get higher funding by the SGK. Parents were then asked to pay for all kinds of made up issues and drug expenses, at times relying on relatives to chip in.

The true scale of this operation is still unknown. Back in 2023, an anonymous individual complained about the scam in a petition to the Turkish Presidency, which is how the scam first came to light. Last week, prosecutors demanded massive prison sentences for every member involved in the operation.
