Big Mac beef is over
If you live outside of Ireland, you might not know of Supermacs. This Irish fast-food chain just won a legal battle against industry giant McDonalds. The European Court of Justice ruled that the US chain could not claim exclusive use of the ”Big Mac” brand - which it has had since 1996 - allowing other fast-food and poultry companies to use ”Mac” in their name and food menus.
Supermacs is now planning to expand across Europe. According to its managing director, it had previously not been able to do so because of ”trademark bullying” from McDonalds. Its victory is seen as proof of the role European institutions can play in protecting homegrown businesses against multinationals. Maybe soon you’ll be able to eat a Big Mac, without going to McDonalds.
