Crossing borders
”Open hearts, open borders”, reads a placard held by one of the protesters on the Schengen Bridge. Hundreds of people crossed Luxembourg's borders with France and Germany to march to the town of Schengen last weekend, protesting France and Germany's border controls. In total, eight Schengen members currently conduct border controls to curb irregular immigration allegedly linked to terrorist threats.
In 1985, the Schengen agreement was signed in the small town on the borders. For the act of signing, the officials embarked on a boat to cast their signature on the Moselle River between the countries – a highly symbolic move.
