Crossing borders isn't a crime, state violence is

French police tear gassed people, including children and elderly, attempting to cross from mainland Europe to the UK on Tuesday. Images show police in uniform entering the water with riot shields and spraying tear gas at groups wearing life jackets. One man appeared from the sea, needing crutches, another carrying a baby. Around 50 people reportedly managed to disembark.

Yet reports of plans to allow France's border authorities to intercept boats up to 300 metres from the French coastline have since emerged. In 2023, the UK agreed to pay €540 million to strengthen France’s northern border. Asked about the use of tear gas, the UK's government said: ”Our work with the French has never been closer.”

It feels strange writing this, but: tear gassing children is wrong, pepper spraying anyone is violent. These people are not committing a crime; international refugee law explicitly states that asylum seekers should not be punished for entering a country irregularly. State violence cannot be met with impunity.
