Europe remains divided over enlargement
Ukraine is the most popular candidate country for EU membership, according to a recent IPSOS/Euronews poll. 45% of Europeans favour Ukraine joining the Union, while 35% are against.
Finland, Portugal and Spain showed the highest levels of support, with 68% of respondents in these countries favouring Ukraine's accession. Slovakia and Hungary had the lowest levels of support at 24% and 18% respectively.
A poll about the enlargement of the EU to include new countries showed that Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Serbia and Albania all had approval ratings between 34% and 37%. In each of these countries, a similar percentage of respondents approved and disapproved of enlarging the EU – showing that overall, Europeans are extremely divided on this topic.
The only EU candidate country where most respondents opposed enlarging the EU was Türkiye, with a 55% disapproval rating.
