No disclosure about Luxembourg's Frontex involvement
While press freedom is steadily declining across Europe, journalists are fighting back. In Luxembourg, this battle has now reached the courts, with the journalists' association ALJP suing the interior ministry for not disclosing documents on Luxembourg's involvement in EU border agency Frontex operations.
The goal is to set a precedent for press freedom and transparency in Luxembourg. This particular case is seen as crucial, given that the legislation on access to information is currently under reform. Journalists in the country have been fighting for decades for the right to access public documents.
Luxembourg's track record on press freedom and transparency is complicated. It was one of the last EU countries to pass an access to documents law in 2018. This summer, the government submitted a draft law on information access to parliament, but without consulting press representatives. The proposed law, riddled with loopholes, would still not guarantee access to files like those related to Frontex.
