Repurrting for duty
British politics is in flux, but one constant political face remains popular: Larry the Cat. Born stray, Larry was welcomed into Downing Street – the UK prime minister's main residence – in 2011 and has since lived with six PM housemates. He was initially employed to address ongoing rodent infestations in the ancient building but reportedly spends more time sleeping than hunting mice.
However, Larry is more than a stay-at-home pet. He is a prized PR asset – having greeted (former) world leaders, including Barack Obama and Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen, over the years. According to one poll, Larry also has a higher favourability ranking than both current leaders of Britain's main political parties.
Having congratulated Keir Starmer on the election victory, Larry took to his unofficial X account to set the tone for domestic relations: ”I like breakfast at 10, lunch at 11, dinner at 3. And 5. And 7. Plenty of snacks in between.” Larry's account has more followers than both Britain's finance minister and foreign secretary.
