Refugee integration

Ukrainian boy goes viral for fluent Irish

On Monday three years ago, the first Ukrainian refugees came to Ireland. Nearly coinciding with that anniversary, a video of a Ukrainian boy went viral. After living in the Gaeltacht (the Irish-speaking area of Ireland) for the past two years, he is now fluent in Irish and has learned how to play Irish traditional music.

Aside from the boy's personal achievement, his fluency illustrates a seemingly successful integration of early Ukrainian refugees – but also how they are helping regenerate towns and villages in rural areas; several villages have seen schools and shops stay open thanks to the arrival of new families. In the Gaeltacht, young Ukrainians learning Irish could even serve as an additional way towards linguistic revival (read about it here).

Ireland's welcome of refugees has not been all rosy. The housing shortage and a rise in anti-immigration sentiment have tainted the past three years. But it's still nice to see that a successful integration of refugees is possible, given the right context.
