No tolerance for democratic backsliding
06 December 2024
Lithuania has banned key Georgian politicians, including the founder of the pro-Russian populist Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, from entering its territory after Georgian security forces violently attempted to suppress protests in Tbilisi. The protests erupted when Georgia's government announced it would delay EU accession talks until 2028 – a move that contradicts the wishes of 80% of Georgians who support EU membership.
Gerda Krivaite Estonia and Latvia match Lithuania's stance, making it a coordinated five-year entry ban across all Baltic states. This unified response to democratic backsliding shows how smaller EU nations can effectively pressure states that suppress civil rights. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
