Training programmes 2025

Master classes

A year-long cycle of master classes for (aspiring) journalists, answering questions on just how it was done. The series provides a toolbox for reporters of The European Correspondent and equips them with knowledge and hands-on skills most useful for everyday journalistic work.

Next to presentations from experts, there will be space for interactive, peer learning: discussions, brainstorms, sharing notes, and more.

Everyone attending at least nine sessions will receive a certificate of attendance stating they completed the cycle of master classes and list the topics covered.

The list below is preliminary and subject to change.

  • A struggle of many junior reporters there is a lot of tips that’s a starting point of any article.

Workshop by Julius E. O. Fintelmann

  • Need-to-knows about working with trauma survivors, ethically and sensitively approaching others’ stories and experiences while reporting.

    Workshop by Stella Männer

  • Touching upon reoccurring themes in journalistic work: for instance impartiality-engagement, fact-checking, protecting sources.

  • A workshop on emotional management with Maja Šimunjak

Behind the story

Monthly knowledge exchange moments with an invited speaker presenting their journalistic project, investigation, or career. Covering various topics and fields, the open sessions will be an opportunity to see the backstage of a story, ask questions, talk to other correspondents, and be surprised by the backstage details of the work.

This is a peer-learning moment for journalists at every stage of their career, an opportunity to check out some interesting projects, talk to each other, reflect, and exchange comments. Each session is separate, with no need to attend one to participate in another.

  • What if instead of technical jargon, climate reporting centred personal experience? How to write human stories for wider audiences and portray global warming as an active component of our lives?

Martin Vrba is a Czech journalist and essayis, Milena Jesenská fellow, writing about the difficult ecological transition right after a post-communist one. You can read some of his work here.
