Manifesto

In the 21st century, Europe must learn to be a continent. Histories and destinies are interweaving, and power is renegotiated. We need to look beyond national borders to understand the challenges of our time. While the rich and powerful are already organised internationally, civil society is not yet.

European journalism is crucial for European civil society. As a pillar of democracy, independent reporting must provide facts and perspectives. European developments influence local happenings. In turn, local occurrences transpire into European decisions. In the fates and coincidences, the flashes of inspiration and mistakes, and the fortunes and failures of the people of Europe, we look for the stories that affect us all. Together, these stories constitute a European understanding.

Doing journalism means taking responsibility for the public. We are aware of our biases and strive not for artificial objectivity but fairness. We do not focus on sensation but on context and classification. Journalism needs empathy – towards the story and those who experience it. Moreover, it needs readers willing to take a chance on an experiment. We develop European journalism side by side with you. Are you with us?
