A Dubai-style neighbourhood in Budapest
13 December 2023
Hungary and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plan to construct a Dubai-style neighbourhood in Budapest, a leaked document revealed. Hungary plans to invest €600 million in the infrastructure, while Emirati companies will contribute €5 billion.
The proposed location has sparked controversy due to concerns about the cityscape. Budapest Mayor, Karácsony, criticises the lack of prior consultation before seeking investors for such a transformative project.

Grassroots movements, such as the left-wing group Szikra (Spark), started protesting. As discussions unfold, the fate of the ambitious Budapest project remains uncertain, caught between conflicting interests and visions for the city's future. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
