Italian courts command the return of migrants from Albania – again
16 November 2024
The Italian prime minister’s plan to transfer asylum seekers to Albania is not going as she planned. In a new legal battle for the Italian centres built to host asylum-seekers in Albania, Italian judges have blocked, for the second time, Italy's plan to send seven asylum-seekers back to their countries of origin, Bangladesh and Egypt. The court has ordered their return to Italy. This decision aligns with EU law, which permits deportations only to safe countries, a status Bangladesh and Egypt do not meet.
![]() | Ariadna Mañé Since the hosting hubs in Albania opened in October, only 24 people have been sent there, after being rescued in international waters while trying to make their way to Europe. After this ruling, all of them have been transferred back to Italy after the plans to return them to their countries of origin were denied by the courts. The Italian government called these rulings politically motivated, and is already preparing new law proposals to bypass EU regulations. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
